St-Laurent Wood Siding Installation in Orleans, Ottawa

From tired vinyl to warm, real-wood character

This Orleans home had original vinyl siding that had done its job and then some — faded, chalky, and making a solid brick-and-gable house look older than it was. The homeowners wanted the warmth of real wood without the repainting schedule that comes with it, so we went with St-Laurent wood composite siding.

We removed the old vinyl completely, right down to the sheathing, so we could see exactly what was underneath before covering anything up. Once the wall was inspected and ready, we installed the new St-Laurent siding across the upper storeys, the gables, and the full height of the chimney chase, with proper fastening and flashing detail around every window, corner, and roof-to-wall line.

The result is a home that reads completely differently from the street: a rich, natural wood tone above the brick, framed by black windows, a black garage door, and dark trim. Same house, same footprint — a whole new first impression.

St-Laurent Wood Siding Installation in Orleans: the finished result

Curb appeal that turns heads on the street

Wood-tone siding over brick is one of the most striking combinations you can put on an Orleans home right now. The warm grain softens the masonry, the black accents give it a sharp, modern edge, and the long horizontal lines make the second storey look cleaner and more proportioned than vinyl ever could.

Engineered wood also takes light beautifully. On a sunny afternoon the grain glows; in the evening it reads deep and rich. That depth is what separates a home people slow down to look at from one they drive past.

Built for longevity, not just looks

Siding is your home's raincoat. Looking good is the bonus — its real job is to shed water and protect the wall assembly behind it for decades. St-Laurent wood composite siding is engineered for exactly that: it's denser and more stable than natural wood, resists cracking, and holds its prefinished colour far longer than paint.

But even the best siding fails if it's installed carelessly. Most of the water damage we see under old siding in Orleans comes from installation shortcuts, not the product: missing head flashing over windows, no kick-out flashing where a roof meets a wall, nails driven too tight so boards can't move, or gaps left at corners and penetrations. Taking the old vinyl right off to the sheathing let us correct the details that keep water out of the wall for good.

How we detailed this Orleans siding replacement

  • Tore the original vinyl off right down to the sheathing so every square foot of wall could be inspected before it was covered again
  • Built the new St-Laurent courses to line up cleanly with the top of the existing brick, with flashing at the brick-to-siding transition so water sheds out over the masonry, not behind it
  • Wrapped the tall chimney chase in the same siding, with step and counter flashing where it meets the roof — the spot where Orleans chases most often leak
  • Finished the windows, corners and roofline in crisp black trim to tie the wood tone to the black garage door and frames

Every Noblewood siding job follows the same professional installation standard, including weather barrier, flashing, fastening and clearances.

Why this matters for Orleans homes

Much of Orleans was built between the 1970s and the 1990s, which means a lot of homes here are still wearing the original vinyl they were built with. After decades of Ottawa winters, that vinyl gets brittle in the cold, fades on the south and west walls, and often hides flashing that was never quite right to begin with.

Replacing it is one of the highest-impact upgrades an Orleans homeowner can make: it modernizes the look of the whole house, protects the structure behind it, and puts your home ahead of the others on the street when it comes time to sell. Orleans is our home base, so we know these houses well.

Questions about this Orleans project

Why does this Orleans home have siding only above the brick?
The original design used brick on the lower storey and vinyl on the upper walls, gables and chimney chase. We replaced only the vinyl sections. Keeping the brick and upgrading everything above it gave the house a modern two-material look without the cost of re-cladding masonry that was still in good shape.
What happens to the old vinyl siding once it comes off?
We remove it completely and haul it away as part of the job. Taking it off, rather than installing over it, is what lets us check the sheathing for soft spots or old leaks and fix the flashing details the original installer missed.
Can a chimney chase really be clad in wood composite siding?
Yes. A chimney chase is a framed box, so it takes siding like any other wall. The important part is where it meets the roof: it needs proper step and counter flashing, because a chase is one of the most common places for water to get into an older Orleans home.
