St-Laurent Wood Siding Installation
Tired vinyl stripped to the sheathing and replaced with warm St-Laurent wood composite siding, flashed for Ottawa weather.
View Project →A bold, modern custom home in Cumberland, finished in sleek black CanExel V-Joint siding that lets the soaring glass gables and metal roof steal the show.
This Cumberland home is pure drama: steep, Scandinavian-style gables, walls of floor-to-ceiling glass, a dark metal roof, and a wooded lot behind it. A home like this needs siding that's clean, consistent and confident, with nothing busy to distract from the architecture.
We clad the exterior in black CanExel V-Joint siding. The subtle V-groove between boards creates fine, crisp shadow lines that add texture up close but read as one smooth, monolithic surface from the road, which is exactly the effect modern black exteriors are going for.
Large window walls like these are where installation quality really shows. Every window opening was trimmed and flashed so water running down those big glass faces is directed out and away from the wall, not behind the siding.
Few looks are as striking as an all-black modern home set against green trees and blue sky. The dark siding makes the glass pop, sharpens every roofline, and gives the whole house a high-end, architect-designed presence.
Prefinished siding is the key to pulling off a dark colour well. Factory finishes are applied evenly and cured under controlled conditions, so the colour stays rich and consistent across every wall instead of looking patchy like site-painted boards can.
CanExel is a prefinished engineered wood siding, designed to resist moisture, impact and cracking while keeping the warmth of wood. Its V-Joint profile interlocks board to board, which helps it lie flat and tight across large wall areas.
On a tall, exposed home like this, professional installation is non-negotiable. Correct fastening, proper spacing at butt joints and trims, a continuous weather barrier behind the siding, and flashing at every window, door and roof intersection are what stop wind-driven rain from finding its way into the wall. Done right, that protects the framing and insulation of the home for decades and keeps the manufacturer's warranty intact.
Shortcuts on any of these are what cause hidden rot, mould and drafts years later — and they can void the siding manufacturer's warranty.
Cumberland stretches along the Ottawa River in the city's east end, with a mix of historic village homes, country properties and striking new custom builds on larger wooded lots. Open, exposed sites like these get the full force of winter wind and spring rain, so the siding has to be detailed properly.
Cumberland is right next door to our home base in Orleans, and we work throughout the east end, from Cumberland and Navan to Orleans and beyond.
